| New Year 2010 dawns |
 Chennaites welcomed the New Year 2010 with gusto. The celebrations passed off peacefully except for protests by the ‘moral police’ of the BJP and Hanuman Sena cadres, who staged a dharna against ‘party culture’ in front of star hotels at Coimbatore and a couple of mishaps at East Coast Road and Pursawalkkam in which two persons were killed.Various residential associations organised grand celebrations which went past midnight. Bursting of crackers and youths vrooming on motorcycles shouting ‘happy new year’ were the scene at many roads in Chennai. Devotees thronged the major temples such as the Parthasarathy, Kapaleeswarar and Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam temples.
